Cyprus Credit Union has grown from 22 founding members in 1928 into a statewide credit union rooted in Utah, with a commitment to members that continues to grow.

    Utah Copper Company Takes Root

    The Utah Copper Company is formed to mine copper in Bingham Canyon, now known as part of the Oquirrh Mountains. Its workforce would later form Cyprus Credit Union.

    Utah's First Credit Union Opens

    On October 1, 1928, 22 Utah Copper Company employees founded Utah's first credit union, pooling savings and lending to one another when needed.

    Early Cyprus Operates From a Fireproof Box

    William becomes Cyprus Credit Union's first president and CEO. Cash sits in a fireproof box at the Utah Copper Company's Arthur Plant near Magna, and members are encouraged to save $1 per paycheck.

    Cyprus Continues Under Kennecott Ownership

    Kennecott Copper Company purchases the Utah Copper Company. Cyprus continues operating on Kennecott property, and board members may serve on company time.

    Muriel Joins Cyprus as Its First Employee

    Muriel becomes Cyprus' first full-time employee. She later serves as the credit union's third president and CEO from 1966 to 1977.

    Membership Expands to More Families

    Cyprus updates its membership rules to include immediate family members of Kennecott employees, beginning a long history of welcoming more people.

    Cyprus Replaces Its Ledger System

    Cyprus buys its first computer to replace the ledger system, which had organized accounts by Kennecott payroll numbers.

    Checking Accounts Arrive at Cyprus

    Cyprus offers checking accounts for the first time, then called “share draft accounts.”

    Cyprus Membership Surpasses 75,600

    Cyprus membership surpasses 75,600, reflecting decades of service and a growing community of members.

    Cyprus Reaches $1 Billion in Assets

    Cyprus Credit Union's assets reach $1 billion, marking a major milestone in our growth.

    Cyprus Earns National Recognition

    For the fourth consecutive year, Cyprus ranks among the best credit unions to work for in the U.S.¹ It is also named a Best Credit Union in Utah by Forbes.
